10 days and counting

Well it has been 10 days since Ryder’s surgery and I can honestly say so far so good. He is doing better then even the doctor’s have expected him too. In fact yesterday Megan(11 year old daughter) was sitting on the couch with Ryder’s teddy bear when he decided he wanted it. He walked over grabbed a hold of it and was going to take it Megan knew he shouldn’t be playing so didn’t give it up. Well Ryder was not taking no for an answer and they began a tug o war struggle. Megan had a very tight grip on it and Ryder gave one tug and pulled so hard he pulled Megan completely off the couch. Yup I would say he is doing VERY well. We have been more fortunate then others in the way that we have not had any bad nights and he has not “crashed” since been home from surgery. From my understandings this is more then likely due to two things. One being that he is a puppy and they bounce back fairly quickly plus he was getting around on three legs just fine for the 12 hrs before surgery. Second is because when he had his amp done they were able to leave his shoulder, which is a way more easier procedure for the dog to go through. Now yesterday he had no pain pills during the daytime that’s how well he was doing but I did give him one at night for fear he may have overdone it. He probably didn’t need it but gave it to him anyway and he immediately calmed down, which he is supposed to be anyway. Really, have you ever tried to keep a puppy calm it is like a loosing battle lol he has more energy now then before the surgery if that’s even possible. For now I’m starting to think maybe he needs the pain pills to help him settle down until he gets his stitches out, but I must say it is so nice to see him back to his old playful self again. For now we will just take it day to day and do as the vet recommends and hope the next 10 days go just as well as the first.

Happy Dance

Well Ryder is doing VERY well. He had a check up today as we stopped in to get some more pain meds but don’t worry he is not in pain but they are helping with his tummy troubles since he has terrible gas pains and gas for that matter. Doc says he is even surpassing his expectations which says a lot because the doc said he was going to bounce back very fast. Also Dylan has finally petted Ryder, I tried on Tuesday evening to get him too and he just sat on my lap and cried saying “mama I am sorry but I just can’t” Broke my heart I tell ya because I know it’s simply from the guilt of leaving the gate opened. Well My son Dylan is special himself, see he was born with two thumbs(on the same hand)joined at the knuckle. At age one he had surgery to correct the problem however his thumb is a little different then “normal”. So I used this to my advantage since they are best budds I simply told Dylan now he is just like you. Wednesday evening I asked him to let Ryder outside(first time since accident). He was very hesitant at first which was to be expected. I simply told him to put his leash on and take him out after all he does it all by himself anyway your just out there to make sure he doesn’t slip on the ice. It worked and he did it but when Ryder came inside he had a present with him. A huge stick lol. I looked at Dylan and he says” mom he wouldn’t come inside he wanted to play fetch and I know he’s not supposed to yet so I told him if he came in he could bring the stick with him” Whatever works right? Well I told Dylan to put Ryder’s stick on his blanket so he would lay down and rest and of course that worked as well. Dylan went to go in the other room and I said bud you need to pet him on the head and tell him good boy since he listened to you. Dylan walked over sat down right beside him and stroked his head and said good boy buddy I love you…my eyes instantly filled with tears. It was at that moment I knew we were all going to be alright and that everything we have went through was worth it to my son could have his buddy back. This was the break through I had been waiting for. So the last 36 hours have been filled with many great things and both me and Ryder are doing a happy dance 🙂

A Growing Fan Club

So when we took Ryder to the emergency hospital the night of the accident there was a lady that not only worked there but also worked at the vet where he would have his surgery. Monday when I went to pick him up she was working and before we left she came in and said she had to take a picture of him with her phone. Of course I said ok, she then tells me it was for the lady’s at the hospital. Apparently they have been texting all weekend asking how he was doing and she would send pictures so they could see he was doing good so they needed a picture of him finally walking out to go home. Well she was also working tuesday when I had to take him back in for his tummy troubles and all she had to do was say his name and he went into the examination room all by himself no leash or anything. Later that evening I get a phone call, it was the ladies from the emergency hospital. I happened to be outside with him when they called so they left me a message. The message said it was them and they heard Ryder had to go back into the vet earlier that day and they were wondering if I could call them and give them an update on how he is doing and they would be greatly appreciated. Well I guess my boy has made a lasting impression on a few of them as they call everyday to check on him and get an update. We truly are blessed to have found people to care for him that have a place in their heart that is almost as big as mine.

A Long 24 hours

Well Ryder has been home for a little over 24 hours now and boy have the been eventful. For starters he came home with NO pain medicine, yup you read that right. I asked the vet and he said Ryder has been doing very well and he really isn’t in any pain and he expects him to bounce back very quickly. So quickly that in fact the morning after surgery he was up walking around and eating and acted as if he was born a tripawd. The morning I picked him up I was informed that when we went to breakfast there was no walking him in fact he dragged the lady that attempted to walk him …yup that’s my rambunctious puppy. Until I did some reading and got some advice from my fellow pawrents I didn’t know that it was abnormal to come home without the pain medicine so for us we didn’t really know any better. Latter that day I noticed he was breathing funny in fact he reminded me of a dog in labor going through contractions. Yup you guessed it I called the vet for answers right away. Well they said to watch him and if it continued to bring him in, happily I can report it only lasted about 10 mins. Latter on in the evening he decide to have some serious panting going on and when I say serious it was as if he ran a mile when in fact he had been laying on the couch next to me the whole time. Since the vet was closed I called the emergency hospital that we took him to before, they suggested taking temp(which was normal) and I could either bring him in and they would check him over or just keep a close eye on him and call vet in the morning. Well the only thing going through my mind is that my poor baby is in pain and I have no way of making it go away, this is the worst feeling ever by the way. So I monitored him for a bit and was actually able to calm him down and somehow we made it through the night, a little sleep deprived in my case but we got through it. By morning he was up doing better ate his breakfast and I thought well today is a new day so we will see what happens. Ryder took a little nap and when he woke up oh boy another issue. He started vomiting so I called the vet and back we went. On a good note he wasn’t in any pain still as the doc was able to touch his incision without even a flinch from him he didn’t even stop wagging his tail. Well we came home a short time later after getting a shot for vomiting, a shot for diarrhea and finally some pain medicine for home. The vet says he is having a tummy issue possibly intestinal but nothing to be concerned with. So I sit here wondering tummy issues really hello last time I checked you took his leg not anything in his tummy so immediately I think the worse. I worry there is another issue from the accident that we missed or something cause you know it just couldn’t be the fact that his incision goes along his tummy instead of the typical one(from the neck down)I see in most pictures. Or maybe the lack of sleep is effecting my judgement either way he is no longer vomiting and we are hoping for a much better 24 hours to come.

A little history on our boy

Well our dear sweet 6 month old puppy Ryder was hit by a car and of course the stupid idiot that hit him didn’t even stop so we were unaware that the accident even happened. He came in the house and right upstairs into the kitchen to eat his food as if nothing happened and it wasn’t until my daughter screamed that he was bleeding that we ever knew anything was wrong. I turned around from cooking dinner to see my boy standing there bleeding ALOT and I then noticed the would and oh my it was not pretty. I will simply say I saw way more of the inside the inside of his leg then I should have. It was around 9pm so we were having a bit of a problem finding a place we could take him to get examined. Luckily a wonderful friend found and even called a place for us to take him and even drove us there so I could sit in the back with my boy. Now under the circumstances you would think oh my this poor dog must be in so much pain at least that’s what was going through my mind….I was amazingly wrong. We are at the emergency hospital with him and we couldn’t figure out how to get him out of the vehicle onto the stretcher since he had his back to the door and with it being his front paw it wasn’t as if I could scootch him back. Well Ryder sat up looked at me and scooted himself onto the stretcher and simply looked at me like hello that wasn’t so hard now was it. Well he immediately won over the hearts of all the ladies there and of course was giving out several kisses. So the doc examined him and I hear the dreaded words amputation I immediately start to cry for fear my poor boy is just going to be miserable. They wrap him up give him antibiotic and some pain meds so he can go home until the morning when the regular vet can see him and preform the surgery. Out comes Ryder all on his own already walking one three legs and the doc said the whole time he just sat there wagging his tail giving them kisses and letting her examine him. If it weren’t for the bright orange camouflage bandage on his leg you would not know anything was wrong with my baby boy. Any doubts or concerns I may have had were whipped away the minute I saw my boy walking down the hallway towards me. To think he had been through so much and still didn’t have a care in the world and somehow just knew it would all be alright.  I am happy to say the next morning Ryder went to the vet and had his surgery and so now starts a new chapter in his life as a tripawd.
